2004–2005
Hanover School Board
Educational Goals

The Hanover School Board will support the Ray School in its efforts to achieve the following goals for the school year, 2004-2005:

  1. Promote and support the continued development of the K-12 curriculum effort to include the following:
    • Emphasis on completing scope and sequences that are in process and on having these approved by the Board during the 2004-2005 school year.
    • Development of scope and sequences for those curriculum areas that have not started this process (e.g., Physical Education)
    • Development of assessment components in each curriculum area for which scope and sequences have been completed. This process will include: (1) the identification of external measures to provide information about the success of our program (e.g., standardized tests created outside the District); and (2) internal measures, created by teachers, that enable teachers to get information about student work and help teachers improve their practice.
    • Inauguration of the first phase of K-12 curriculum (i.e., scope and sequences) for Physical Education.

  2. We will begin implementation of the revised science curriculum at the Ray School. As part of this goal, we will implement at least one new unit at each grade level which will focus on a particular, i.e., vernal pools, forest, meadow, stream, river/ocean. The implementation of the habitat based units will be guided by assessment data from pilot projects carried out during school year 2003-2004. Students will record baseline scientific data, identify key research questions, and demonstrate their learning through public presentation and grade level assessments.   All implementation strategies are part of the   of the K-12 Science curriculum effort. (This is a multi-year goal.)

  3. We will pilot new health curriculum units at the fourth and fifth grade levels. We will connect the assessment data we gather from those units to system-wide assessments already established in the District, such as the Youth Risk Survey and the ASSETS survey. These units are being developed in conjunction with the implementation of the K-12 health curriculum. This is a followup to the piloting of health curriculum units at the third grade level this year. (This is a multi-year goal.)

  4. We will continue the development of schoolwide assessment procedures for reading comprehension strategies (Mosaics Initiative), as part of the Language Arts K-12 curriculum. We will identify achievement targets for three specific comprehension strategies (using background knowledge, questioning, and making inferences) and track our progress towards meeting those targets. (This is the last year of multi-year goal.)

  5. We will revisit school culture issues, focusing especially on refining our behavioral expectations in relation to the three R's (Rights, Responsibility, and Respect). It is our specific intent to make sure all staff members, students, and parents are well informed and clear about the behavioral expectations laid out in our Ray School Student Handbook, our 3 R's poster, and specific classroom rules. We will involve all parties in a thorough discussion and revision of these expectations. (This is a process carried out approximately once every five years.)
