REASONS FOR FUNDRAISING

At their September 27 meeting the Dresden board voted unanimously to adopt the plan submitted by the Athletic Fields Committee and proposed a bond of $2.58 million, to be voted on November 8.  In this proposal is an independent fundraising component that requires us to raise $100,000 in unrestricted funds.  To purchase desired items not in the proposal, such as dugouts, scoreboards, and a shelter, we need to raise at least another $50,000, bringing our goal to $150,000 plus.

For some folks the big question is:  Why fundraise for something that has been traditionally paid for by the taxpayers?  The answer is not black and white.  However, here’s our basic philosophy:  The rules have changed; with the rising cost of education, extracurricular activities— including athletics—must be partly financed via private fundraising.  More and more school districts are seeking private funds to construct everything from athletic fields to gyms.

Within the Dresden district, we too are trying to control the rising cost of education.  Below are some specific reasons for why we are seeking to raise private donations to help pay for Dresden athletic facilities.

  • The Athletic Fields Survey indicated that the public was far more likely to support a bond that was below $3 million.  This assumption was based on analysis of the questionnaire results by Bob Sokol, Dartmouth sociologist, who concluded that as the figure climbs toward $3 million Dresden must demonstrate that more than just Dresden students will benefit.  Unfortunately, this latter contingency could not be promised.  Per the approved plan, the cost to taxpayers will not exceed $2.58 million.
  • There is also plenty of anecdotal evidence that the community, which is highly sensitive to a rising tax burden, would like to see some fundraising effort.  More specific evidence can be found in the comments written in on the athletic fields survey.
  • By helping ourselves, others are more likely to help Dresden by passing the bond.
  • Because the Athletic Fields Committee’s proposal is relatively barebones, there are a number of items that need to be funded independently, such as bleachers and scoreboards.
  • Those in the community who feel strongly about the importance of team athletics have an opportunity to show their support by aiding fundraising.
  • Last but not least, these donations are tax deductible.

PLEASE NOTE:  Everyone in the Dresden community will benefit from the construction of athletic fields, from the high school students, to the kids in recreation programs using the fields.

How to Make a Donation

The most efficient means of making a donation is to send it to the Dresden School District, which has created a holding account that will be credited interest and audited annually by an independent auditor.  Checks are payable to “The Dresden School District – Athletic Fields Fund.”  Please download the Dresden Athletic Fields Donation form, fill it out, and send it to the SAU office. You will receive a letter from the SAU acknowledging your contribution.
