Welcome to Mrs. Holmes’ Iditarod web site. I am a second grade teacher in Norwich, Vermont. Each year, my class follows the Iditarod sled dog race as part of a unit on Native Arctic Cultures. Most of the students I’ve taught in the past have agreed that the Iditarod is their favorite unit of year.
This year I am fortunate to have had some school funding provided to go to Alaska for three weeks. I will be taking a Teacher Training Program on the Iditarod, visiting a kennel, having lunch and dinner with mushers and Iditarod supporters, riding in the basket of a musher’s sled as an Iditarider, and then following the race for eleven days by bush plane. My goal is to stay in touch with my students back in Vermont during the race via this web site. I will be posting journal entries starting the week prior to the race while in Anchorage, then during the race from cabins, schools, libraries, or through the hospitality of individuals who live along the trail.
This is a very exciting adventure for me and for my students. It is my dream come true! I hope that you will enjoy my journal entries and learn more about the race.
If you would like to contact me, please e-mail aarin@valley.net. I will be very busy on the trail, but I will respond as quickly as I can!
