Here is what takes place in the
classroom
Musher Biographies
Each student reads and summarizes the
biographies of five or six mushers. These get posted in the hallway
so curious fans can learn about
the mushers too.
Tracking the Mushers
We use the Internet to keep track of
the progress of the mushers. We have a big map of the race on
a bulletin board in the hallway, and we put flag pins into the
map each day to show where each musher is located along the trail.
News Reports
Students summarize news updates about
the race, report them to the rest of the class, and then organize
them on a news board in the hallway to keep the school well informed.
Weather Reporting
The students get the weather off of
the Internet for both Norwich and along the Iditarod Trail. Temperatures
are compared and recorded on a variety of graphs.
Alaska Journal
This year Mrs. Holmes will be writing
from the trail. Her journal will be read each day to learn more
about the race.
Prize Money

This year the first place musher receives over $68,000 in cash,
on display in a large fish tank. We display a large cash-filled
fish tank too!
Red Lantern

The last musher to reach Nome extinguishes
a red lantern, a tradition signifying the end of the race. The
last musher is known as "the red lantern musher." We
have a red lantern on display as well.
