LOCAL MUSHERS COME TO VISIT

Local sprint racers Hank and Fran Plaisted
do a special program for our class each year.

They demonstrate and explain a variety of things to the students, from how to approach an unfamiliar dog, to the difference between a basic sled and a race sled.

The students learn how to harness a dog,

and how to attach a dog to a gangline.

The students can visibly see how much the dogs love to pull a sled!
The cacophony of barking brings excited chills to all observers.

The students learn how to skijour and use a polk sled.

They also learn, first-hand, the strength and endurance a dog must possess in order to pull a sled. By acting like dogs, the students hang onto the gangline and pull me, the musher, along a selected trail. They always fall exhausted to ground!

Hank and Fran really give the children an understanding of how incredible these racing dogs truly are! A special thank you to them for volunteering their time each year to educate Marion Cross School children about dogs and mushing.
