Sylvan Lake, located midway between Calgary and Edmonton, is the home of the longest maintained ice skating trail in North America. In March 2007 the 10-kilometer loop will play host to a 50-kilometer race that is expected to attract hundreds of European skaters in addition to many Canadians and Americans. 10 and 50 kilometer tours will also be held. | In February 2006 nearly 200 skaters participated in a 10-km tour at Sylvan Lake plus 50 km and 200 km races. Skaters raced under a replica of the famous Bartlehiem bridge (photo right), a landmark on the route of the legendary Elfstedentocht canal-skating race in the Netherlands. |
