Sylvan Lake, Alberta
site of the 5th Annual Sylvan Lake Marathon March 3, 2007
Sylvan Lake, located midway between Calgary and Edmonton, is the home of the longest maintained ice skating trail in North America.

In March 2007 the 10-kilometer loop will play host to a 50-kilometer race that is expected to attract hundreds of European skaters in addition to many Canadians and Americans. 10 and 50 kilometer tours will also be held.

In February 2006 nearly 200 skaters participated in a 10-km tour at Sylvan Lake plus 50 km and 200 km races. Skaters raced under a replica of the famous Bartlehiem bridge (photo right), a landmark on the route of the legendary Elfstedentocht canal-skating race in the Netherlands.
