Lyme School Handbook
School Nurse
School NurseThe Lyme School employs a registered nurse, part time. If your child has an injury or becomes ill while in school, an assessment will be made, appropriate care will be administered and when necessary, a parent will be notified. If your child needs an evaluation after becoming ill or injured outside of school, your child's pediatrician is the appropriate person to contact.
Health screening in schools has been shown to be efficient and economical in detecting problems early. A health screening includes a measurement of height, weight and blood pressure, and an assessment of hearing and vision. Each year students in various grades will receive a health screening.
If your child must take a prescription medication during school hours, please provide the school nurse with a prescription from the physician, medication in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container(pharmacists will supply another for school, if you ask) and a note from you requesting that the school comply with the physician's order. Please note that when medications are required to be given three times a day, this regimen usually can be carried out at home to minimize disruption of the child's school day. If your child occasionally takes a nonprescription(over the counter) medication, please send in the medication in the original labeled container and your written permission. The school nurse must be notified if a nonprescription medication is to be used during school hours. If your child uses an inhaler or must carry medication due to a severe allergic reaction, you will be contacted by the school nurse to complete and sign additional health forms. All medication will be stored in the nurse's office.
