FAQ: "Why does the RSVP newsletter say it’s from Grafton County Senior Citizens Council?" (see the return address on back, if you have one handy.)

GCSCC is our sponsor. We use their non-profit bulk mailing permit, and according to postal regulations, we have to show the Council’s/permit holder’s address prominently. We are allowed to display our logo.

What exactly is GCSCC? Grafton County Senior Citizens Council, Inc. is a non-profit organization which provides community-based programs designed to enhance the health and well being of older adults living in 39 communities throughout this New Hampshire county. Since 1973, GCSCC has gradually built a service system which, today, offers senior centers, nutrition programs which include senior dining rooms and home delivered meals, transportation, outreach and social work services, adult day care, telephone reassurance, chore and home repair services, information and referral, education, recreation and opportunities to be of service to the community through volunteering. The eight senior service locations include: Bristol, Canaan, Lebanon, Lincoln, Littleton, Orford, Plymouth and Woodsville.

The mission of GCSCC is to develop and offer programs and services which support and enhance the health, well being, dignity and independence of older adults. Toward this goal, GCSCC seeks to provide a broad range of group and individual activities and services designed to respond to the interrelated needs and interests of older people.

What does it mean that GCSCC sponsors RSVP? Carol Dustin, Executive Director of GCSCC explains, "As the sponsor of RSVP of the Upper Valley and White Mountains, GCSCC recognizes the benefits to society of a lifetime’s accumulation of knowledge and skills. We believe that volunteer service provides each individual with opportunities to grow, to learn, to feel productive and needed, as well as to give something back to one’s community. Some 505 RSVP volunteers, working in libraries, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, human service agencies and correctional services, provide older men and women the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to an improved quality of life in their communities. The program enables older adults to maintain their independence, usefulness and self-esteem through meaningful volunteer service which meets community needs. We very much appreciate the contributions of each RSVP volunteer and hope that, by working together, we can encourage many more individuals to consider volunteering."

On a day to day level, GCSCC provides non-profit status to RSVP, which is not incorporated. As part of GCSCC, RSVP has its bookkeeping, grant management and payroll services provided, as well as office space in the Upper Valley and Littleton Area Senior Centers. GCSCC’s Board of Directors develops policies and procedures the organization as a whole, while each program, including RSVP, has a separate Advisory Council to provide specific support and guidance.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program meets compelling community needs by recruiting and referring volunteers aged 55+ to work in partnership with local non-profit organizations and municipalities.
