freed: from servitude, 1621The Carver family with whom John lived, survived the terrible sickness of the first winter, during which many Pilgrims died. But the following spring, on an unusually hot day in April, Governor Carver, according to William Bradford, came out of his cornfield feeling ill. He passed into a coma and "never spake more". His wife, Kathrine, died soon after her husband. The Carvers had no children. For this reason, Howland is thought to have inherited their estate. It has been said that he immediately "bought his freedom," but no record has survived. [Wikipedia]married: abt 1625 in Plymouth, MA

purchased: James Jones' farm, now great-grandson Norman Townsend'sThe diaries of Abel Storrs show that even with relatively low-maintenance sheep as his farm's main stock, there was plenty of work to keep Mr. Storrs and a few hired men busy through the course of the common fifteen-hour workday. Depending on the season they plowed, furrowed, planted, weeded, hoed, hauled rocks, spread manure, split rails and chopped wood, hauled more stone (a necessity if you wanted to plant anything in that rock-strewn soil), built stone walls with the rocks they hauled, mowed, mended fences, husked corn, tapped maples, boiled sap, picked apples, and cut and hauled hay. There were also cows to be milked, an assortment of other animals to be fed, and harvesting to be done when the crops were ready. Planted in the Storrs' fields were wheat, corn, oats and potatoes, all in quantities large enough to yield a surplus that could be sold. Peas, cabbage, beets, carrots, parsnips, and several kinds of beans were grown for family consumption. [RC p 60]Abel Storrs got hit in the eye with a buggy shaft while unhooking the horse, and lost his eyesight in one eye. He lost sight in the other eye at about age 75. Since he lived til 95+, he was blind the last 20 years. [AJC]

I take a spectator's outlook on world and national affairs; strictly avoid religious controversies - blind leading the blind - and never cared enough about movies to take them in. I can't see that the world is any better off for so much speed; at the same time think no man should be disheartened if in the space of one short life he accomplishes anything for the betterment of mankind morally, intellectually, or physically."

died: abt 1973 in Cambodia, SE Asia"Dana left Saigon along with Errol Flynn's son to pursue a news story. Neither man returned. They were alleged to have headed for Laos. Time Magazine, which had published some of his work, covered their disappearance not long after the fact. One of his colleagues retraced their steps twenty years later, documenting his trek with a video camera. Although hard evidence eluded him, the verbal testimonies obtained from eye-witnesses strongly support the theory that they were executed in Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge about a year after their capture by the Viet Cong.In 1992 Kimbal Union Academy, where Dana completed his secondary education, dedicated a new photographic dark room to Dana's memory."
