David, Jenkin (or Jenkyn) (1713 - 1778/79) [IGI]
father: David, John
mother: ? Ann
born: 17 Mar 1713 in Wales
emmigrated: to Marlboro County with brother OwenIn 1736, or early in the following year, a company of the Welch settled on Cat Fish, a stream in what is now Marion District, in the tract first assigned them. Among these were Jenkin and Owen David. They remained there a short time, and then removed higher up the river to the neighbourhood of the Welch Neck. As appears from the petition which led to the extension of the Welch Tract much above its original boundary, the lands on the upper Pedee seem to have suited their agricultural purposes better, being well adapted also to settlements immediately contiguous to the river. To that rich and compact body of land, embraced in a bend of the river, opposite the present village of Society Hill, and called, from an early period, the "Welch Neck," the attention of these prudent settlers appears from the first to have been directed. And there they began to gather in a body.served: French and Indian Wars under General Waynep 51, History of the old Cheraws, by Alexander Gregg

At the time of her death, although over seventy-five years of age, she was active, energetic and retained all of her strong intellectual powers in their full vigor. She was always industrious, cheerful and a friend and neighbor to everybody. She was of small stature, with red hair, green and piercing eyes, moved about with agility, and very sociable in nature. When a boy I spent a good deal of time at her house, and feel that much of her energy and determination were infused into my character. She was an inveterate tobacco smoker, and I can well remember seeing her light her pipe with fire produced by striking flint and steel together, as this was before matches were invented. moved: to Florida by Oct 1830, and to Texas in 1838Their first two children were born in Georgia; but they had moved to Florida by October 1830, where their third child was born. While in Florida, Asa was a member of the state militia during the Seminole Indian War. In the fall of 1837, he and his family traveled by boat to New Orleans; and in the spring of 1838 proceeded by oxcart to what is now Colorado County, but at that time was a part of the Republic of Texas. By 1840, he owned 555 acres of land, 20 head of cattle and five slaves; and in 1845, he obtained title to an additional section of land (640 acres) in what is now Borden County. That same year he served on the committee that drafted the preamble and resolution for the annexation of Texas to the U.S. He was active in seeking this annexation; and as a result, in 1741 he had charges brought against him for participating in a riot.Asa Townsend was an active Mason and during the 1840s he was instrumental in the organization of Masonic lodges in the towns of LaGrange, Round Rock, Columbus and Waco, Texas. In 1846, he served as county coroner in Colorado County and appeared on the 1846 poll list there. During the summer of 1846 he enlisted as a Private in Company E, First Regiment, Texas Mounted Riflemen for the Mexican War, receiving his discharge on 21 September 1846. In 1849, he served on the Colorado Navigation Association. We find him and his family on the 1850 census for Colorado County, age 56, with a real estate value of $6,000. His wife's age appears on this census as age 65; however it is believed this was an error by the enumerator as their youngest child on this census is age two. And on the 1860 census her age is listed as 64, which would be in keeping with the 1795 date of birth listed for her elsewhere. It is interesting that included on this census was a set of twins. For twins to have survived in that era was unusual.
By 1860, Asa's estate had increased to a value of $30,000, making him one of the more prosperous ranchers in Colorado County. To date, he has not yet been located on the 1870 Texas census; but as he was residing with his son, Henry Sumner Townsend in Colorado County, at the time of his death in September 1876, it is possible he may be found with him or another family member in 1870. It is not known where either he or his wife are buried, but presumably it was in Colorado County, Texas.

moved: with brother Spencer to Texas, abt 1826About 1826, he and his brother, Spencer Burton Townsend, came to Texas to investigate the land being offered to settlers by the Mexican government. Satisfied with what they learned, they returned home and sold their holds and with their brother, Asa Townsend, moved their families to Texas sometime between 2 May 1835 and 2 Mar 1836.He appeared with brother, Spencer, before the Board of Land Commissioners on 2 Mar 1836, where he signed a statement he had arrived in TX prior to that date and received a league of land in David G. Burnet's colony and settled near what is now Crockett, Texas on the old Nacogdoches Road. He signed the list of petitioners asking the Texas Congress to establish Houston County in 1837 and listed Mustang Prairie as his home.
During the Texas Revolution, Thomas Roderick Townsend furnished beef and corn from his farm for the beleaguered Texas freedom fighters. And he also served in the Texas Ranger company of Captain Elisha Clapp. Captain Clapp was also from Mustang Prairie and he and his men had been charged by General Sam Houston on 31 May 1837 with the task of ranging from any point on the Brazos River to a Mr. Hall's trading house on the Trinity River in order to intercept raiding Indians.
Thomas Roderick Townsend was serving on jury duty when he died on 31 August 1838 at LaGrange in Fayette County, Texas. In 1839, the settlement of his estate in Fayette County, TX indicated the sum of $33.47 was due the State of Texas. Supposedly his grave in LaGrange City Cemetery is marked with a tall limestone marker.

resided: with son Robert E. in 1870 [census 1870]
resided: with son Charles P. in 1880 [census 1880]She was a good woman with no selfishness, no glaring faults, and seemed to live for the good and happiness of others. She had but little education, but was blessed with a strong mind in a strong body. In her everyday life she was considerate of the feelings of others, self-sacrificing, charitable in her opinions, full of the milk of human kindness, patient, cheerful, and blessed with all the christian graces. From my earliest recollection she was a member of the church and a devout christian. The impressions made upon my youthful mind by the prayers made at her knees have been ineradicable. They have had much to do with the formation of my character. My mother was a good and true Samaritan. Wherever there was sickness and trouble she delighted to be. Everything she could do to alleviate sorrow and distress was a work of love to her. Hers was a life of absolute self-abnegation. I have known her, when scarcely able to walk, leave home in order to minister to some one who was sick and suffering. All alike, rich and poor, were the objects of her solicitude and sympathy. I do not remember now ever having heard my mother speak evil of any one. She was always ready to excuse the faults of others and to throw a veil of charity over them. She had positive ___ations, loved to work, was always eager for information, and preeminently sociable. The christian doctrine, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" was the rule of her life. She loved her neighbor as herself. She was humble, patient, cheerful and submissive under suffering and trouble. Her motto always was "God's will be done". She was a loving and affectionate mother, and to her teachings and example I owe a great deal for what character I have and what I have accomplished in life. [CPT]died: 18 May 1894 in Marlboro Co, SC
