1. Vladimir Solovyov 2000
An International Conference on
"Vladimir Solovyov and His Philosophical Legacy"
August 26-30, 2000
At the Institute of Philosophy, Moscow

This conference, held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Solovyov's death, will occur in a year of millennial significance for the world and of political significance for Russia, since the presidential election occurs in May. Thus, for several reasons, it seems an auspicious moment to meet, to take stock of our time – and to ponder its connections with another time, Russia's "Silver Age."

Program: It is planned that the conference itself be for the three days Monday August 28 through Wednesday August 30. However, conference registration will begin Saturday August 26 and there will be conference-related tours and events on both Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th. For example, it is anticipated that there may be a tour to the house near Moscow where Solovyov died on July 31, 1900.

Topics: While the overall conference topic is "Vladimir Solovyov and His Philosophical Legacy," it is expected that there will be a number of sub-sections at which papers will be presented. Among these are likely to be:
Solovyov as a systematic philosopher
Solovyov's ethical conceptions
Solovyov's philosophy of history
Solovyov as a social and political thinker
Solovyov and the national problem
Solovyov and the philosophy of Cosmism
Solovyov as a religious thinker
Solovyov's legacy in the thought of Florensky, Bulgakov, Frank, Berdyaev and other "Silver Age" philosophers
Solovyov's legacy in the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin

A fuller listing of sub-topics will be provided in subsequent announcements. Suggestions for additional sub-topics will be welcome. The Pre-Registration Form below provides details for submitting paper titles and paper proposals in the form of brief abstracts.

Travel and Housing: Travel will be arranged individually by each participant. Suggestions for housing will be provided by the conference office. Among the likely alternatives will be a reasonably-priced hotel with convenient metro connections to the Institute. Of course, participants may make other arrangements at hotels or bed and breakfasts (lists, with prices, will be provided).

Costs: The conference fee for U.S. and West European participants will be $100 (to be paid upon registration at the conference in Moscow). This fee will include tea during the conference but no meals or housing. For Russian and CIS participants there will be no fee.

Official Languages: The official languages for the conference will be Russian, English, French and German. The extent of translation services will be indicated in later announcements. (All participants presenting papers are encouraged to provide synopses in English which can be distributed at the conference.)

Pre-Registration Form: Please e-mail the form below to inform the Solovyov Conference Office in Moscow of your interest in attending. Address to: borisova@iph.ras.ru
If you do not have e-mail yourself, you are urged to use e-mail via an institution with which you are associated or some commercial provider of this service. If you use regular postal mail, communication may take 3 or 4 weeks each way, adding close to two months to the time it takes to get a reply to you.

As noted below, US and West European participants are also requested to e-mail a copy of this form to the Transnational Vladimir Solovyov Society’s US office. Address to: ccgtrans@valley.net
